Harris County’s Department of Economic Equity & Opportunity (DEEO) recently hosted a Business Roundtable highlighting new leadership, innovative programs, and expanded resources for residents and small businesses across the county.
The department’s work centers on creating inclusive economic growth by strengthening workforce pipelines, supporting small businesses, and fostering collaboration among public, private, and nonprofit partners.
Workforce Training & Career Pathways
Two major workforce initiatives were highlighted:
- Hire Up Harris offers free job training for Harris County residents in healthcare and customer service careers. Through partnerships with Wesley Community Center and Volunteers of America Texas, participants gain skills, certifications, and support to advance their careers.
- Apprenticeship Advantage expands access to registered apprenticeships and technology training. In partnership with organizations such as NPower and the Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation, the program provides hands-on training in tech and skilled trades — allowing participants to earn while they learn.
Looking Ahead: Community Collaborative
Coming soon, DEEO will launch a Community Collaborative, a cross-sector partnership bringing together chambers of commerce, trade organizations, nonprofits, and government agencies. The goal is to better coordinate services, strengthen partnerships, and advance the local economy.

Support for Small Businesses
DEEO also introduced the Harris Hub, a small business support program providing customized technical assistance in areas such as marketing, financial management, and digital development. Eligible businesses may qualify for grants of up to $5,000 after completing required technical assistance hours.
